Signs That Your Mercedes Needs Power Steering Fluid

April 7th, 2017 by

Power steering lets drivers turn without having to make a big effort to move the wheel. In a power steering system, steering wheel movements cause fluid inside a hydraulic pump to move. This pressure moves a piston that directs gears to steer the car. Unfortunately, sludge and grit build up in old fluid over time, damaging rack and pinion seals. Power steering fluid can also leak occasionally, so you should have your power steering checked regularly by a professional. If you have an older vehicle, changing its power steering fluid can extend its life. Here are some signs that your Mercedes needs power steering fluid.

A Whining or Squealing Noise

If you hear a whining, squealing, moaning, or growling noise when you turn your steering wheel, your power steering fluid could be low. You could also have a bad power steering pump or belt. Have a mechanic replace your power steering fluid and check for leaks immediately. You could lose control of your vehicle if your power steering fails while you’re driving.

A Wheel That’s Difficult to Turn

Low power steering fluid or a leak in your power steering system could damage your power steering belt. If your wheel is difficult to turn, you could have a damaged belt, or you could need to have your power steering fluid flushed and replaced. Have it replaced before the problem becomes worse and your power steering fails completely.

Lots of Vibrations or Jerky Steering

If your steering wheel vibrates a lot when your car’s engine is idling, your power steering system is failing. Vibrations are another sign that your power steering belt is damaged, loose, or worn out. Your steering could also feel jerky, jumpy, or erratic when you’re moving slowly. Some steering wheel positions often cause more vibrations than others when there’s a power steering problem. Your steering could feel strange if your tires are worn or low on air as well. Check the air in your tires and have them rotated and aligned regularly.

Visible Leaks

If you notice a puddle or stain under your vehicle, you could have a power steering fluid leak. Power steering fluid is normally clear or amber color, and it tends to smell like burnt marshmallows. If the fluid is old, it might be the same color as engine oil, but it will still have a distinctive smell to it. Power steering fluid, oil, and many other vehicle fluids are a fire hazard, and they’re toxic to pets. Clean up leaks immediately and have your Mercedes inspected by a professional.
