Does Your Mercedes-Benz Need an Alternator Repair?
If electronics in your Mercedes are showing signs of trouble, then the problem may lie with your alternator. The alternator is the component that uses the engine’s power to keep your battery fully charged. If your alternator begins to fail, you might even end up unable to start your engine. Here are five signs that you might need to head to your local Mercedes dealer for alternator repair.
Battery Warning Light
A modern Mercedes is jam-packed with sophisticated microchips. If these computerized monitors detect any problems with the charging system, you’ll instantly see a little battery-shaped light appear on your dashboard. This light will usually be accompanied by a message saying, “Visit Workshop!”
If you see this, you probably have problems with your alternator. Head to your local dealership to have it checked out. It’s also a good idea to immediately turn off other electrical systems so as to conserve what little remaining battery power you have until you reach a technician.
Faltering Electronics
Any struggling electronics means you have problems either with your battery, your alternator, or the wiring and connections. If you notice your instrument panel, air conditioning, radio, sunroof, power windows, or any other electronics playing up, have both your battery and alternator seen to.
Dimming Headlamps
One unmissable sign of charging trouble is when the road ahead is getting darker. If your headlamps are weakening, then either the bulbs themselves are giving out, or you have a problem with your battery or alternator.
Frequent Stalling
The spark plugs that send ignition charges into your combustion chambers also require electricity. If your alternator isn’t doing its job in keeping your battery fully powered up, then the electrical signal to the spark plugs will be interrupted. This can lead to a good deal of stalling.
Trouble Starting
If your car fails to start altogether, then your battery probably hasn’t been charging properly. To determine if the underlying problem lies with the battery or the alternator, jumpstart your car. When you’ve successfully jumpstarted the engine, see if it keeps running in idle. If it does, then your alternator is working just fine, using the engine’s power to recharge the battery. In this case, your battery is at fault.
But if the engine dies again shortly after a jumpstart, then the alternator is probably the culprit because it’s not using the engine to refill the battery with electrical power. You’ve diagnosed the problem. It’s time for a trusted technician to sort it out.
How Your Mercedes Dealer Will Help
When it comes to issues with your charging system, the first step is to clearly identify where the problem lies: with your starter, battery, alternator, or wiring and connections. A diagnostic device is used to work this out. The readings on the device are cross-referenced with the designated service limits of your particular model of Mercedes, in order to identify the problem. Then comes the repair or replacement work, using whichever specialist tools are required.
